CIA Challenge Exam vs. Regular CIA: Which Path is Easier?
If you hold a CPA or CA, you might be eligible for the CIA Challenge Exam. Here is a breakdown of whether you should take it or the traditional 3-part route.
The IIA offers a fast-track route to the CIA certification for qualified candidates (typically those holding a CPA, CA, or equivalent active accounting credential). This is known as the CIA Challenge Exam.
But just because it's a "fast track" doesn't mean it's a walk in the park.
The Traditional 3-Part CIA

- Part 2: Practice of Internal Auditing
- Part 3: Business Knowledge for Internal Auditing
You study for one, pass it, and move on. It breaks the massive volume of information into digestible chunks.
The CIA Challenge Exam
The Challenge Exam compresses parts of all three domains into a single, 150-question exam (180 minutes). It assumes you already possess the accounting and financial knowledge from your CPA/CA, so it skips the financial accounting portions of Part 3.
Pros of the Challenge Exam: - Time Saving: You only sit for one exam instead of three. - Cost Effective: The registration fee is generally lower than the combined cost of the three separate parts.
Cons of the Challenge Exam: - Information Overload: You must master the entirety of the IIA standards (Parts 1 & 2) plus IT/security concepts (Part 3) all at once. - High Pressure: It's all or nothing. If you fail, you have to retake the entire massive exam.
Which Should You Choose?
Choose the Challenge Exam if: You are an excellent test-taker, you can dedicate 80-100 hours of intense, uninterrupted study, and you want the credential fast.
Choose the 3-Part Route if: You prefer to pace your studying over 6-9 months, juggling work and family, and prefer to focus on one subject area at a time.
